After spending a week in Christchurch we were ready to explore some more of New Zealand’s beautiful beaches. With this in mind we headed to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula. We were lucky with the weather and were rewarded with three days of beautiful sunshine and some of the hottest days we had experienced in New Zealand.
Akaroa is a historic French settlement with beautiful galleries, bars, cafes and comapnies offering boat tours to spot and even swim with dolphins. The town is situated 75km outside of Christchurch and has become the hub for cruise ships after the nearby town Lyttelton suffered severe damage from the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.
If staying in Akaroa I would recommend heading to the Top 10 Holiday Park. The campsite is situated on a hill which overlooks the quaint little town and is a gorgeous place to watch the sunset over the village. The holiday park offers a range of accommodation to suit all budgets from unpowered campsites to more luxury cabins and is only a 15 minute walk from the town centre. The shared facilities (toilets and kitchen) are very clean and there is even a pool on site!
Akaroa is a great place to escape from the city and it was one of the first times we felt like we were on a holiday rather than budget backpackers!
